Why does Anger get a bad name?

It’s ok to feel what you feel

One of the most common issues that comes up with my clients, is the inability to deal with or regulate their emotions.  The truth is that we ALL feel emotions. They are normal, natural and serve an important purpose.  Anger, specifically, has a bad reputation for being the worst emotion and we constantly hear ‘I shouldn’t get angry’.

The truth is, you should be feeling angry as it is one of the most important emotions out there. Anger tells you something isn’t right, or that someone has broken your own personal rules in some way. It directly points to your values and belief system, and makes you who you are ☺

The Feeling is NOT the behaviour

The aspect of anger that gets people into ‘trouble’ is the behaviour expressed when feeling angry. This can include having outbursts, shouting screaming – and let’s not forget the infamous passive-aggressive version, which can be just as cutting! – as well as physically hitting someone or something.

But please know, the emotion isn’t dangerous or harmful. Sure, it can be uncomfortable but it’s just a natural human feeling that we all feel at times. The aim is to have a better relationship with your emotions. Understanding this, in itself, can be very therapeutic.

Understanding and being in control of your behaviour

If you’re aware that you’re expressing behaviours that you don’t like but are finding hard to control, here’s some ways Take A Step can help:

  1. Understanding the role of anger
  2. Understanding what triggers your specific anger (e.g. which personal rules boundaries have been crossed)
  3. We teach you anger management tools and techniques to manage intense emotions
  4. Learn how to communicate effectively and be more assertive in a non-harmful manner.
