Mental Health Care Plan

What is a Mental Health Care Plan?

  • A Mental Health Care Plan is the name for a GP referral to a mental health clinician.
  • Clients can receive rebates for up to 10 sessions with a current mental health care plan in a calendar year (ie. Jan-Dec)
  • The GP approves an initial 6 sessions, then upon a GP & Clinician review the remaining 4 are given.
  • The GP determines eligibility based on the presenting issues. Life Coaching is NOT an approved therapy under Medicare rules.

How much will I get back?

  • Take A Step sessions are $200-$220, depending on location. Sessions need to be paid in full and only then can the rebate be processed.
  • Take A Step – outdoor nature-based session (item 80165) rebate is $106.05 per session
  • Take a Step – telehealth or phone sessions (Item 91176) rebate is $82.30 per session
  • The TAS team can process your rebate for you (if your Medicare account is connected to your bank account) – and you should receive the rebate within 24-48 hours.

What’s the next step?

If you wish to access Medicare rebates for your sessions, here is the process of getting a GP referral:

Make a double appointment with your GP and ask them to complete a mental health care plan to be addressed to:

What to expect at the GP?

The GP will ask you to discuss the main issues you are experiencing and need support with. They will then complete a Mental Health Care Plan containing questions which summarise your current levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Please email your Mental Health Care Plan before your first session so we’re all ready to organise the rebate for you as soon as your first session ends.
